Cows are built to eat grass, so all of our beef are fed a grass diet. Grass-fed beef means that the cattle are given access to pasture where they can graze and forage for food as they would naturally do in the wild. Some farms may subsidize the grasses in the winter if the climate does not support a year-round lush pasture. The overall intent of “grass-fed” is to keep the eating patterns as natural as possible.
This is the opposite of a grain-fed diet, where grains are given to animals, resulting in high calories and an unnatural growth pattern, where the cattle grow much faster (and much cheaper).
